You make it sound as though Microsoft is comfortably in control, which is not the case. The reason they'll need a new console is because launching Natal as a peripheral isn't going to have the impact that they need in the new gaming market. Hardware power is no longer a real reason to create a new console, but a need to get a fresh start on brand naming definitely is.
