Perhaps, hard to say. It sort of the concept of avant garde music or art.... If you stray away from the main core element, you cater to a very limited, niche crowd. A lot of games now have their loyal following, but aren't really gaining new fans. They are focusing too much on graphics and forgetting to make the game fun. 1 hour long cutscenes in MGS4 would be an example of this. Less art, more fun.
