To start, Mario games aren't like other games, in order for a Mario game to be a success commercially it's not about the amount it sells it's about the amount of hardware it moves. But looking purely at sales, it can be said that a Mario game going 10 million sold is a rare occurance, but when compared to other games it doesn't seem so rare.

If you don't believe me here you go:

http://www.vgchartz.com/games/index.php?page=2&results=50&name=mario&console=&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Sales&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort=

to put it plainly, having Mario in the name doesn't guarantee millions sold.

Fan's are fans, everyone has their degree of interest it's OK to hate on people who love something, in fact it's promoted as hate means there is love, people hate when something is loved that's usually the reason for hate in fact. It's because something is encouraged when someone feels they are infringed upon through or in response to that encouragement. =P

But hey Mario is a household name, but he wasn't always.

Mario sold his first 10 million because he was great back then.

He sold 1 million because he wasn't as great as he was when he sold 10 million.

He sold 10 million again which means he's as good as he was when he sold 10 million last time.

Numbers don't lie but subjective yammering and propaganda can come from anything for any reason :)
