Having played NSMB Wii and nearly beaten it over the holidays, (it was my brothers and he headed back home to Toronto) I'm inclined to agree somewhat, in the sense that it seems good Nintendo games of recent are anointed as great if Mario is involved. It was a similar thing with Galaxy, which I enjoyed, but didn't understand all the love and uber-high scores it received. To each his own I guess. It's not like I'm anti-mario/nintendo anything, as Super Mario World remains one of my favorite games ever.
NSMB Wii is a fun game, but I can't help but feel that Nintendo is capable of a lot more with the franchise. If I have 3 friends over and I'm given a choice, I'd much rather play LBP.
EDIT: Although, you could relate what I'm discussing to most big franchises, such as Final Fantasy. It gets Millions of sales regardless, whereas other great JRPG's haven't come close to its sales.
