Yeah.
They can't get direct numbers from Wal-mart and Sams Club. So they create consumer panels to track purchases. They build what they feel is a representative sample of shoppers at Wal-mart and poll them constantly on what purchases they've made there. It's how they track Wal-mart and Sams Club sales vs just getting the data directly from specific stores.
Or at least that's what it looks like to me... the approval is likely only because Wal-mart is a big player NPD wants to keep happy.
