But that's not what I take issue with haha. First and foremost, how best story went to Uncharted 2 is just beyond me. There are loads of better choices, namely Assassin's Creed II. I think they just gave it to it in similar fashion that Oscars give out some stuff. But I don't agree with it nor their choice for it in overall excellence in sound. Second best strategy game being Halo Wars over the likes of Empire: Total War is frustrating. Finally best downloadable game I would not have given to Shadow Complex. Fat Princess or Flower or Splosion Man seemed like better choices to me. Other than that I think it was a pretty good list. And no I didn't spoil the GOTY. |
I'd agree on strategy and downloadable game. As for story, I think it's down to how the story was delivered vs the story itself. Uncharted 2 is straight from the Raiders school of Saturday morning B movies, however I do think (of all the games I played in 2009) that it conveyed its story and characters better than any other title. Like Raiders it portrayed a B movie to A movie standards. The voice acting was superb, it had a genuinely nice feel for narrative and flow, from it's great start through to a satisfying end (not the boss fight, the actual end which is the final cutscene).
That's why it gets so much kudos on story I believe - not the story itself, but how well it is told. AC2 for example, as an more open world title, simply doesn't tell it's story as well strictly speaking. It's okay, but fairly standard and by game design you can break it up in silly ways, the standard curse of open titles - I'm trying to avenge my family here, my next mission is to track down one of those responsible, but I'll just break off and find a few feathers and beat up a cheating husband first.
AC2 is in some ways a treasure trove for its wonderful conspiracy theory driven elements coupled with a traditional story of revenge, but it executes its gameplay a lot better than the story, whereas Uncharted 2 does both very well and I'd argue uses better narrative decives with more conviction and confidence than AC2.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
