MAG vs. Modern Warfare 2

Okay, let's get down to business. MAG has the internet going nuts. Some people love it. Some people hate it. The IGN editors completely threw the game under bus during their impressions, so I would believe they'll probably 7.9' it at the most and everyone will move to the next shooter of the month. But if they do that they won't give the gamers what they really want to know:

Is it better than Modern Warfare 2?

That's what Resistance 2, Battlefield Bad Company, and Killzone 2 ran into. Are those games good shooters? Sure. Did they score close to Modern Warfare on review sites? They actually did. Did they sell anywhere near PS3 version of Modern Warfare? Hell naw. Well, why not? Alot of gamers have drawn this conclusion: yeah, they're nice games, but why should I drop 60 dollars on that shooter when I got Modern Warfare right here? So games get trashed now-a-days because they're not "Call of Duty" enough. I won't lie, I was sipping the Kool Aid myself. When I bought Resistance 2 I changed the button layout to match Call of Duty 4 exactly so I can play both games without having to adjust to controls. Basically, to me Resistance 2 was just Call of Duty with aliens.

Resistance 2: Call of Halo

But on to MAG. There are some things I think that MAG actually does better than Modern Warfare 2, just like I believe there are some things Modern Warfare does better as well. Let's bring up one thing:

1. Map design.

Let's face it, Modern Warfare has some downright horrible maps. There are some awesome ones like Terminal and Highrise, but Wastland, Downpour and that damn snow level have got to go. It's almost as if they're saving the good maps for DLC (but they wouldn't do that, would they?). They have no real logic or strategy behind they're design, and there are some many areas that campers can abuse in the game.

MAG level design is much more simplistic yet balanced. Every area has a clear cut area that can be flanked pretty easily, so you and your other 100+ teammates must be on guard at all times.

2. Auto aim

This is the reason why a lot of haters (not me mind you, just what I heard) Modern Warfare 2 a scrub game. It has MASSIVE auto aim that can almost be guity of lock on. Here's an example: During a gun fight with this "Tango" (I play too many shooters) at 4am in the morning I manage to land a shot on him while he was strafe and kept my finger on the trigger (well, R1) but I started wiping my eyes with my right hand so I couldn't move the right analog to keep up with his strafing. When I took my hand off the right analog stick, the bullets followed him while he was strafing to the right even though my right hand wasn't guiding it. He died because of the auto aim. It works vice versa too. I know I can't outstrafe anyone on the game because of the massive auto aim either. Therefore it doesn't matter who has the better aim, it boils down to who shoots first. I'll just bunch lack of recoil in this section too.

3. Balance

If it's one thing Call of Duty is not known for it's balanced gameplay. I'll bet anyone you won't see a nation wide Modern Warfare 2 tournament anytime soon like a Madden, Halo, or Street Fighter tourny. I there is one, then I will eat a cheeseburger and film it on Youtube. No joke. WIth Deathstreaks, Killstreaks, n00btubes, javelins, akimo 1887's, heartbeat sensors etc., the game won't be mistaken for Chess. That doesn't mean it's not fun. Marvel vs. Capcom is the most broken fighing game ever, but some still call it one of the best fighters ever too.

Mag is a rock, paper, scissors game to the core. The best way to take out an objective is to call an airstrike. Before you can do that you must take out the triple a guns. In order to take out the guns you must take out the respawn bunker. For the squad leaders it almost becomes an RTS. Teamwork and communication are a must.

Of course, Modern Warfare 2 is a beast for a reason. I like...

1. Customization

There are so many things that can be attached to your gun it's rediculous. Shotguns, M203's Acog, thermal scopes, you really feel like you're using a different gun every time you change attachments.

2. Gunplay

Hands down Modern Warfare 2 owns any other shooter in this category. The guns feel like they have a solid kickback thanks to the Dualshock 3 rumble.

3. Graphics

For some, this is more important than anything else. Personally I don't think MAG looks that bad, but it's not touching MW2's graphics. That includes the silky smooth 60fps which never dips.

4. Accessibility

It's no secret that Modern Warfare is the more casual friendly shooter of choice. In fact, I'm actually a fan of death streaks, since that means no matter how bad you suck, you still have a chance. Not only that, but you probably get a bonus for ending your death streak, so if you've never played a shooter before you can still feel good about yourself. Even if you suck.

The main point I'm trying to make is that MAG is a shooter for gamrs with a required taste. Just because it's a good chance IGN will 7.9' it doesn't mean it's not the shooter for you. The same can be said for Modern Warfare 2; just becaues it's on it's way to be the best selling game ever doesn't mean you're not allowed to like other shooters either. Don't trash the game just because it's not "Call of Duty" enough. Understand it for what it is then make your decision.
