MGS3 didn't struggle because it was a prequel but because 2 had such a nonsensical story that it alienated a good chunk of their user base. Oh, and there were plenty of other good titles on the market at that point.


Its a fact that a prequel never sells as well as a sequel. Look at DMC sales. And MGS 3 had absolutely nothing to do with MGS storyline. The game was actually a prequel to Metal Gears 1 and 2 on the MSX.

 

Right, DMC2 being a disappointment and there being plenty of other good fighters on the market definitely didn't have an impact on DMC3...

The fact is MGS2 disappointed and alienated a lot of the people who enjoyed MGS1. With the series increasingly incomprehensibly story line, and the fact that there were plenty of other stealth actions games, its naive to say that MGS3 sold poorly just because it was a prequel.
