But Sony needs an even lower price point ...for the US region.

Say what!?!

USA is the cheapest PS3 market in the world. Cheaper even than Japan. WTF more do you want? How much more does the rest of the world need to subsidise the US PS3 market? Sony is losing most of its money in the USA now. They need to start focussing more on the markets where they are already selling at a HW profit or break even (and outselling 360 in most of them to boot). Like releasing Demon's Souls for one thing (though it would probably be cheaper for me to import the US version from Play Asia than pay the NZ retail price if/when it gets launched here; gotta love region free game SW). Sony would be financially better off dropping prices a bit (25-50 currency units) everywhere other than the USA.

Keep treading water in the USA until they can actually turn a per unit profit there, then put the marketing into overdrive. I expect some 2010 SW titles will be reasonably attractive in the US market which will help to keep it in a competetive (though not superior) position to the 360.
