No game could ever kill Mario. You wanna know why? He has spanned too many genres.
You would have to make an IP that outsells him or outpopularizes him in platformers (both 2D and 3D), sports titles, and RPGs. At this point, a chance to kill Mario ended after Sonic's fall in popularity (1995 or 1996?) The only one who can do it is Nintendo.
