I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that some "casual gamers" who played stuff like soccer games with their friends on PS2 still haven't upgraded to a current gen console. And those people won't buy a Wii either, because they want to play new FIFA games, etc.
And some may have bought a Wii but quickly stopped playing because it didn't offer them what they wanted, and instead waited (or are still waiting) for the price of the HD consoles (especially PS3) to drop even further.

It should also be taken into consideration that not all people who played videogames on PS2 still play videogames today.

I don't understand your comment as new FIFA games are on the Wii.  You seem to be assuming that people keep buying Wii consoles and Wii games (Wii software sales > Xbox 360 and PS3 combined last week), but they do not play them?  Why do they buy games if not to play?

Gamers who are used to sports games on the PS2 are going to prefer to play on a gamepad to a Wiimote unless it's Tiger Woods. Do all these games (FIFA, Madden, NBA2K, WWE, etc.) have classic controller support?

Not to mention that the Wii doesn't have all the sports games. Many are Ps360 exclusive. As a MMA fan, how could I be sold on a Wii if I want to play UFC Undisputed and EA Sports MMA? The Wii didn't get UFC 2009 and it won't get UFC 2010. It won't be getting EA MMA. UFC 2010 and EA MMA are games I'm really looking forward to. I'm also a casual boxing and used to be a big hockey fan. No Fight Night Round 4 and NHL 10 on Wii? Hard sell. I have those games on my rental queue. Games I would be missing out on if I didn't have a 360 or PS3. And then there's a whole bunch of other sports games that I don't care to brainstorm that aren't on the Wii because there are just so many sports games out there.

I wanted the Wii to pull it off (because I feel that both Sony and Microsoft wronged their fanbase with $60 games, DLC abuse, historically greater hardware expense even taking into account inflation, etc.) but if the third-parties aren't supporting it properly and treating it like a red-headed stepchild, it's hard to pick it as a #1 console if you want to play the type of third-party games you played on your PS2. Nintendo deserves part of the blame for the lower level of third-party support. They pushed motion control hard and the 'core' PS2 base that migrated to 360 and/or PS3 doesn't want their franchises to go motion control exclusively. If NATAL and Gem/Wand/etc. replace gamepads, it'll be a sad day in history.
