what was microsoft thinking?

What throws me for a loop is the Playstation labeling of the four side buttons in a diamond formation. I have problems remembering which button is where. I had forced myself to try to do the following:
X is at the bottom
Triangle is on top
O is to the right of the X
and Square is to the left of the Triangle.

I hope I got this right. It is NOT intuitive to me at all.
