Final Fantasy was never a series to be stuck into a same JRPG conception, even in the early days, don't forget that FFII was one of the first overall JRPG to actually put up a Job-like system in which you had to train every stat and every weapon in order to evolve.

The main problem between established franchises going beyond the complete borders of what they achieve in past games is the alienation of their entire fan base.
Final Fantasy have always been a series about changes and different approaches to the JRPG genre, but never have they strayed away from it, it's an entire different ball game to go for an entire new genre.

ff8 for example, best jrpg ever, but people hated it, because they wanted ff VII 2 CLOUD REvange.

It was hated true, but most of the Fanbase bought it as well and there are quite a number of fans who loved it. All FF have the fans who love it and the fans who hate it.

Most old school FF fans dislike FFVII in detriment of FFVI, because they too wanted a FF VI kefka's return or something.
