One of the firmware upgrades meant that the error could show up as E74. I think as for gone, it has no more gone than it is with the PS3. What has gone are the scary failure rates.

I put most of the blame on the introduction of lead free solder (Look up tin whiskers and reflow) as the problems are mostly solder related. Fortunately for Microsoft time has soldiered on and they have fixed mos of the problems or at least reduced them. The fact remains that modern products are more susceptable to these solder related issues than they once were. Microsoft must shoulder a lot of blame as Sony certainly showed it had better manufacture experience and an extra year with which to tackle manufacture problems, a year Microsoft could of done well to spend ironing out the kinks.
