For me single player > online multi-player > local multi-player

Kinda depends on the genre too.

An FPS that doesn't have good online multi-player better have a kick ass story or I wont buy it. I mean whats the point of an FPS if I can't shoot other people in the face? Shooting NPCs in the face is boring, they don't even bitch and whine that i'm smashing their dreams.

RPGs (the only other genre I play pretty much) on the other hand can go either way. There is nothing better than a stellar MMORPG. I played one character in EQ for >100 days, as in actual play time. Very few single player RPGs can get me to play a single game for >100 hours. Most of the time though I want nothing more than to sit down and play an RPG by myself.
