Has no-one mentioned Media Player Classic yet? Combine it with ffdshow decoders and it will play 99.9% of videos out there, with lots of options, proper out of the box scaling and soft-sub support (one of VLC's weaknesses). It's the best video player I've ever used.
Also, Foobar2000 or Winamp as an audio player.
Free Download Manager and JDownloader will probably come in handy as well.
Oh, and ImgBurn for burning ISOs
And Daemon tools for mounting ISOs...
