Secret rings was actually good in concept (minus the god awful story and voice acting that really just needs to be done away with) but terribly flawed in practice. Having to "earn" good control (such as improved side to side movement, and speed) through an RPG mechanic was a terrible terrible idea. And the control concept was also a terrible terrible idea. Moving only forward (unless you needed to go backwards in which case you walk backwards with the camera still pointed forwards), and all control relegated to motion was also terrible for a precision game. It was a nice idea done in a god awful way. When you were actually moving forward, it felt great, but those moments were few and far between. |
No, i fully agree that the whole "earn better control," thing was idiotic, and probably turned off a lot of gamers who weren't willing to work through it to get to the good part, with the silky smooth controls. That stupid decision probably contributed to a lot of the negative reviews it got.
I'll also agree that the controls for not moving forward were bad. Backing up was definitely a chore.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
