If anything, Secret Rings was a sign for what they should do in the future, and did. Daytime Sonic in Unleashed was mostly a straight rip of the mechanics they invented for Secret Rings (up to and including the fillable boost meter), as well as its more speed-based, straight running gameplay. The only thing missing from Secret Rings was a healthy dose of platforming in there, but if you want speed in your Sonic, that was the game to beat. |
Secret rings was actually good in concept (minus the god awful story and voice acting that really just needs to be done away with) but terribly flawed in practice. Having to "earn" good control (such as improved side to side movement, and speed) through an RPG mechanic was a terrible terrible idea. And the control concept was also a terrible terrible idea. Moving only forward (unless you needed to go backwards in which case you walk backwards with the camera still pointed forwards), and all control relegated to motion was also terrible for a precision game. It was a nice idea done in a god awful way. When you were actually moving forward, it felt great, but those moments were few and far between.
