Well I've had a similar experience with my ps3 and feel like I should share. It's comforting to know you aren't alone lol. here it goes:

I got a 60gb ps3 July 2007 for $500 and it YLOD on me Sept 2008. I paid $150 to Sony for repairs and they sent me a refurb 60bg. The refurb YLOD on June 2009 and sony insisted on collecting another $150. Instead of paying again, I borrowed my cousin's ps3 (she has no use for it) and played it till sept 2009 when the slim launched and just got that instead for $300 (I've thus lost BC but I think it's better to have no BC than to have a time bomb for a console).

I've thus spent over $1000 on ps3 hardware when you include tax. It's annoying but I dont think I can do without the black box and like you I find it difficult to switch systems completely.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler
