All of these things were easily visible from back then. 3D gaming and tracking demos were available, MS was already talking about 'forward compatibility', hardware revisions, etc etc.

Yep. But IMO one must approach creating a thread like this from the perspective of writing a short article. Pretty pictures and a couple of rewrites are the order of the day.

Corporate strategy is hard, especially when you try to figure it from the outside.

Edit: But the big question of vindication is really still up in the air. The cards which I see falling in a certain way can still fall in other ways, as like they said in Terminator: "The futures not set"
