If PS3 was the leading console would Sony be totally broken?

Of course a more successful PS3 would have lost Sony more money in its first year on the market, but with a lead over the course of the whole generation the chances to make all that money back would have been higher than they are in the current scenario where the PS3 is still in third place.

actually sony dropped the price even when they were winning.. and aren't as greedy ;).
