Whether or not the asteroid is actually a threat, it sounds like a good opportunity to learn a thing or two about mission planning and engineering for space projects involving big rocks in space. This could have future applications in mining space rocks for raw materials (something China is already looking into) or dealing with a more dangerous asteroid that might appear in the future.
