Rumors have stated that they did try to get the Chrono Team back.  Trobule is, they're all over the place.  SOme of the core people already work for them, such as Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama and, though he played a VERY minor part in Chrono rigger, Nomura.  So they could all come back.  However some of them went off to form their own company, which now are owned by Nintendo (Monolith Soft).  And the head producer, Sakaguchi, also went off to form his own company, Mistwalker, and is pretty distant to Square now (that whole 'millions of dollars lost' on Final Fantasy and near bankrupcy and politely left Square thing).  Plus, the original writers for both Chrono games aren't even working at Monolith Soft OR Namco anymore...so whatever they're doing.

So...its kind of hard to get the 'true' Chrono team back.  The next best thing might simply be to get a new team together with as many members from the old team you can.  And then get a new development group.  And this is where a third party might be useful.  Say....Level-5?  They've been doing a number of pet projects for SquareEnix recently and practically redid the nearest thing to Chrono Trigger in the last 14 years with Dragon Quest VIII.  If I could see anyone doing the next Chrono game, it would be them.  Of course, only if they got the original writers back AND some of the other original staff.  Mostly Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama and the original writers.  But for the actual grunt work, Level-5 would probably be best at this point.

That's entirely true, but also it's kind of a similar situation with what happened with the original Lufia team, since most of them went separate ways, some to Natsume and some to Taito.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a Chrono Trigger remake (or at least S-E allowing the Ressurection Project to go on) or even a true continuation to it's universe (I was dissapointed with Chrono Cross being so far away from what Chrono Trigger built), but I also share with you the same feeling that it's pretty much near impossible for it to be so.
