Why do the PS3 and 360 sell differently in different regions?

I can't explain for the UK, Australia, or Canada, but the reason the Xbox got the lead over PS3 in the US is pricing. In the US pricing is very important and sometimes we may even pick cheaper less well made products over higher-priced quality products. That is why sometimes companies drop their prices on their products in the US while raising it in other regions to compensate.
