I often wondered, how much MS lost for trying to save some quids replacing faulty units with refurbished faulty ones, that RRoDed many times, instead of replacing them with the latest and more reliable ones since the beginning. I guess refurbishment was farmed out to cheap factories, so, while recovering working components made sense, it could have been even more sensible to mount them on new mobos whenever possible, as bad mobo design that with excessive thermic deformation strained too much the brittler lead-free soldering alloy was the main culprit for RRoDs.
