Mario is a system seller, a huge system seller. You don't just chuck him out on your old system and hope for good sales, you force all those millions of people who want to play to buy a Wii 2, helping to secure your position in the next hardware race. That goes double when you're actually selling your hardware at a profit.

I don't expect to see a new 2D console Mario until we see a new console from Nintendo. Looking at how this game is being recieved, Nintendo may wish to make it a launch game, or at least a first year release.
