Blue: Sorry it was something I saw linked through at www.beyond3d.com quoting from a Sony executive. Its something I regret not saving a bookmark for.

Red: They had a lot of software development sent their way exclusively at the start of the generation on the assumption that the PS3 would win. The fact that the library exists is in part because of the PS2 and PS1. Furthermore consumers all made the assumption that certain titles would be exclusive or at least release on the PS3. Look at FFXIII sales in Japan, a majority of their userbase bought a PS3 in part because of an assumption that FFXIII would be released for that system.

Blue- Ahh, thank you

Red- I have no doubt that some people (maybe even many) originally bought a ps3 because of possible future exclusives. But that was only at the beginning of the generation. For the past 2 years and the majority of the ps3's life plus userbase, that couldn't have been the case. The current success that the ps3 is experiencing has to be due to the diversity and quality of it's games, no?

I don't see how it could be selling above the 360 this holiday season without that. (even excluding Japan because of the exclusive FF13 release)

@Blue I remember it because it came up around the time there were big arguments about the cost of Killzone 2. I used it as an example to prove that Killzone 2 was not the most expensive release.

@Red: The data seems to show in the demographics and the games bought. The traditional PS1/2 franchises and the games which have a long pedigree have done better on the PS3 relative to the Xbox 360 and the new I.P or recent I.P games have done relatively better on the Xbox 360. In addition to this the Playstation audience tends to be slightly older than the Xbox 360 audience with the latter appealing a lot to teens and 20 year olds with the Playstation audience skewed towards the thirties more.

If comparing the Xbox 360 to PS3 around the world. Where the PS3 is doing better relative to the Xbox 360 are also areas where the PS2 did better relative to the Xbox compared to say America where the Xbox 1 did the best against the PS2 so does the Xbox 360 do the best against the PS3. Im not saying that Sony haven't done good work as well this generation, all im saying is that they had a natural advantage which has helped to keep them in the game. No console not called Playstation has survived by launching at 600 Euro or 5-600 Dollars.

Killzone 2 cost 27 million Euros to make. For comparisons sake Halo 3 cost $71million. According to a bonafide Sony employee on a different forum. Sonys most expensive game is likely GT5 at $60million as Yamauchi mentioned. The only new ip on xbox that has had blockbuster sales is Gears which tallies with xbox having captured the shooter crowd while ps3 has a more diverse userbase. Put Halo3 on ps3 and my betting is it'd have sub 5 million sales. Which also tallies with Sonys business direction with having multiple quality games in all genres while MS release multiple Halo, Gears games.
