I've been following alot of the online blogs and stuff, and yet again, it seems like this is just another Final Fantasy that completely rewrites itself. This means some will love it, some will hate it, that's inevitable when you change so much about the game.
What I've gathered is that it's going to boil down to whether the linearity will hurt your experience or not, as alot of the game is simply a matter of walking down a path, fighting monsters, watching a cut scene, fighting a boss, probs have another cut scene and rinse and repeat. In my opinion this isn't very different to ANY (post FFVI, excluding FFXII) Final Fantasy's opening half or so - just they made an effort to give you the placebo of having freedom.
General impressions are it's completely love hate, I think for me it's now at the stage where I'm not going to know until I play the thing. In terms of side quests the only thing I've read about is a mission based hunt thing similiar to FFXII's. I've heard some of the hunts get harder then the final boss of the game though, which does excite me, especially as this isn't supposed to be an easy FF game anyway.
I just hope there is more side quests then mission hunt things, it would sort of seem a bit of a step backwards otherwise :/.
