While anecdotes of sold outs can't be taken as direct proof of anything in particular, it's better news than people saying the shelves are full and nothing's moving.
I haven't been to a game or electronics store for a couple of weeks. All I know is that the larger retailers who advertise a lot on TV are mostly advertising the PS3 in their list of great bargains (and at a lower than normal retail price) along with the normal things like digital cameras, TVs, iPods, cellphones etc etc.
One retailer is offering no deposit and no payments until April on all consoles (along with lots of other gadgets and gizmos) which is almost unheard of for consoles. Normally with no deposit + deferred payment/interest free deals the ads usually say "excludes gaming consoles and Apple computers"
