I know he wants Nvidia. I suggested he buy a GTS 250.
If you're just going on price/performance, then neither reliability nor Linux support should stop you from buying an ATI card, because Nvidia cards have at least as many issues. If you've had issues with AMD that's unfortunate but your chance of a bad one is no better or worse than Nvidia at this point.
