Sure it cost some money, i wasn't being that literal, but you do realize an 'avatar' is a tiny little square picture - that is what you're paying for in terms of production cost.  Sony's mostly charging us for the right to have a unique avatar displayed - and not letting us use our own (this is why its bad).

I'm mostly mad that they've kept the same old ones for so long, now that they're finally adding new ones - they decided they'll charge us for them.  It's that whole philosophy, nickle and dime people by exploiting the locked-down structure of PS3, much like how a cell-phone carrier charges you for ring-tones, by not letting you make your own.

They're charging you for an optional extra.  If they were asking you to pay for something that was a requirement, then that'd be a different story.  It's like paying for DLC.

I'm not sure how ring-tones work where you live, but they've never been locked down to a provider in the countries I've had a mobile phone in.  In fact, you can just use any mp3 on your phone as a ringtone?!
