Sony's mostly charging us for the right to have a unique avatar displayed - and not letting us use our own (this is why its bad). It's that whole philosophy, nickle and dime people by exploiting the locked-down structure of PS3, much like how a cell-phone carrier charges you for ring-tones, by not letting you make your own. |
They're charging you for an optional extra. If they were asking you to pay for something that was a requirement, then that'd be a different story. It's like paying for DLC.
I'm not sure how ring-tones work where you live, but they've never been locked down to a provider in the countries I've had a mobile phone in. In fact, you can just use any mp3 on your phone as a ringtone?!
