R-P-G: Role Playing Game.... you take the role of characters and progress through a story leveling up, etc. etc. How are they not RPGs?

So any game where your characters increase in ability is an RPG? Wrong. Is Metroid an RPG? Castlevania? Zelda? No more than any of those. The first RPG was Dungeons and Dragons. Video Game RPGs all derived from those gameplay mechanics. Anything else is an adventure game, NOT an RPG.

Zelda II's an RPG. By strict genre definitions, so are CV2 and the Metroidvanias.

I think Pac-man and Tetris should be considered RPGs too then.

Update: Last Rebellion is coming out in Feb! Maybe this IS the year of the RPG. (please be a good game, please be a good game)

Pac-man and Tetris don't have large explorable worlds, complex narratives or dynamic stat character grinding.  Why isn't Zelda II or SotN an RPG exactly?
