How is voting for the president evidence that popularity = quality? Leaving aside the most recent few presidents of the USA because I don't want to creat a whole other argument, I think history has shown more than once that the best person for the job failed to get elected as president. Or are you saying that in every free and fair election since time began the best person has always won? I'd like to see that position being argued, especially where partisan politics is involved.
To succeed in sales, and in voter popularity, you need to reach a certain level of quality, no arguing there. But in some situations the bar is set pretty low. The more PR and marketing can mask the true quality of the product/person the lower the quality bar falls.
