Funny you should mention that; when I first saw it, I had no idea how it was possible either. A testament to the Uncharted narrative is how even that didn't pull me out of the story.
I also didn't have any problems with the "spaniards" you encounter later on (I've heard some decry their inclusion in the game).
Between you, Kantor and CGI, you may have convinced me to skip the GOW collection and pick up 2 first...I'm a sucker for peer pressure apparently.
