Anime can be really awful. Most of it is made on extremely low budgets and turned out to make a quick buck.
JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest may have drawn a lot from anime, but they've created aesthetic and storytelling styles that aren't really following the same conventions as anime any more (in the opinion of one foreigner).
That said, anyone ever seen Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind? It's got airships and chocobos and it was made in the early eighties, before Final Fantasy.
