Three main reasons (alright four actually):
1 - conflicting national interests and goals
2 - conflicting religous beliefs
3 - conflict driven by economic needs
4 - mad guy somehow ends up in charge (this one can lead to really bad results of course as we know from history)
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
