If they have a pre-determined life cycle, why are some launch models still going, while people who bought their PS3s 18 months ago have gotten YLOD?

Bad treatment of your PS3 will cause it to fail. More so than some other consoles.

Yeah i treated mine very well, I did all of the above things, I always was nice to it, but still. Like I said in my case it was not down to the user.
