Do you have any official numbers to back up that claim? Search for "replacement PS3 drives" and "YOLD fix" on any search engine and you will get all the links you want.

I'll tell you the same thing, do a google search and you will find all the evidence you need. From multiple YLOD fix tutorials, to replacement DVD drives, and even people that offer repair services. Try ebay, and look at the ammount of broken PS3s and replacement parts for sale. If that isn't enough evidence I don't know what is.

It's pretty simple, Sony isn't out there selling time-bombs to screw people over. These are complicated, high-tech pieces of equipment and shit happens. My PS3 gave me the YLOD after about a year and it was out of warranty so I had to fix it myself. It was pretty simple (very similar to the RROD fix), I just replaced the cheap ass thermal compound that Sony uses with my own Silver compound and reflowed the chipset with a heat gun. It works pretty well now but it will crash every once in a while. The problem is that the chips put out way too much heat, even thoguh Sony has a pretty decent cooling system. It will get better over time, Sony usually improves their hardware quality with revisions.

While I totally believe you that all that stuff is there, it doesn't equal proof that there is an increase in PS3's breaking. It just shows that PS3's can break, and people want to fix them.
