In the three weeks Ive had a 120Gb Slim it has frozen three times on me.
Once watching iPlayer, once playing Uncharted 1 and once trying to install Pure. I have the system in an open shelf about 12 cm from the wall end. Even at this distance the wall is hot to the touch after a couple of hours of play. I also have the latest firmware (3.1 I believe).
As someone said most of the freezes that can't be easily attributed to heating are due to the complicated software states the machice finds itself in, much like a pc. Sometimes I do yearn for the toy like simplicity of generations past (in this regard my good old Wii has been rock solid over the past two years).
However if i experience more than another couple of freezes in 2009 I have a good mind to return it to the shop and get another one.
Anybody got any tips for treating your ps3 with care, i.e. keep well ventilated, dont turn the machine on from the controller, etc ?
