I was surprised at how much a difference it made to go from DVD playback on my PS2's DVD player compared with the PS3. I figured it would be a minor change, but it's quite noticeable on a good HDTV. And BluRay at 1080p looks positively unworldly - like digital cinema. All the visual effects, edges, color-tones come through like they should. (One little note: make sure the RGB color is turned all the way on, it's an option on the PS3 menu).
So, yes, if you're looking for a high-quality player, the PS3 is worth every penny.
