Remember when Sega pulled the plug on the Saturn because it was doing poorly in the West, Saturn games and consoles were still being sold in Japan. When Sega decided to become a software company and abandoned the Dreamcast, they still supported the Dreamcast in Japan long after the console cycle ended everywhere else.
My point is Japan is not Microsoft's territory and if their gaming division in Japan fails to bring in revenue, then Microsoft can easily withdraw from that market. For Nintendo and Sony, Japan is the last market they will abandon. Japan is where their main location is at and that gives Japanese consumers some insurance that the console they invest in will continue to be around for some time.
We all can agree that if we knew Sega was only going to support the Dreamcast for a couple of years, no one would have invested in that console. It is the same with Japanese gamers, they do not know if Microsoft is committed to their market enough. |
The Japanese couldn't care less if Microsoft was to sacrifice itself. Japan is a socialistic nation whilst America is individualistic. They are for each other and we are for ourselves. They will support their companies and help them grow so they then provide them with quality giving back to community. America downsizes their companies and outsources to Asia so they wont have to pay workers as much and raise profit margins. America is the polar opposite of Japan....we promote competition and open-mindedness which is why we fail with the rest of the world. At some point Europeans buy their goods to support their economy, Japanese buy their goods religiously and America buys from everyone. If you've got something of value we want it. The average Europeans consumption rate per capita is nowhere near to us. We need to start being a little nationalistic so quality can come back to America.

You make good points on the rest of the world being more community/society driven than the US. However I think its important to note while we are on the subject, Ipods have literally crushed the MP3 market in Japan. Even Ken Kutaragi was disappointed with Sony's response to Apple's Ipod. So while Japanese do prefer their own goods and services, there have been exceptions.
