You can back up anything on your PS3 to an external HD or thumbdrive. I backed up all my save games when my cooling fan died and I had to send it in for repairs. The only issue I've seen is that the PS3 would only recognize backed up videos, pictures and music was if I backed them up in a folder labeled "videos", "pictures", and "Music"
