Sony gets the Cell cheaper because it has deactivated one Spu (that makes the CPU a lot cheaper) And Sony invested money for Development. So it gets the Cell again cheaper. And Sony is selling the PS3 at a loss. While the Server manufacturer sells lesser units then Sony and wants probably a lot money for the work. And taxes are higher the higher the Product price. And the Cell which is used for servers has still some differences and they said in that report that a Server which is configuered with 2 Cells costs 8000 Dollar and 3 PS3s have the same power as this Server so its about 8 times cheaper. Weird but Sony has different components, you just dont know which things are in this server. And Sony produces the PS3 in masses. So they get a different price for the parts.
A PS3 is much much cheaper to produce then a server because of different reasons. And the Airforce just benefits from this.
The Cell might be old technology but for number crunching Cell has a perfect architecture most other Cpus dont have for the same price it beats in one disciplin still the most other CPUs. You dont know what they want to do with them.
