The PS3 is ready to use, it even allows them to use Linux out of the box (well if they're getting the older models that is).
If they built the systems themselves they would have to order the Cell CPUs (probably at a higher price than Sony pays), memory, boards and to make a customized linux for their system. Then they'd have to hire employees to design assemble and test the stuff.
Compare all of that with just placing an order for 2200 PS3s and hooking them up to a network...
There's a reason why most companies buy made PCs instead of designing their own. If you're going to have a huge amount (like Google does), it may pay off to do your own design, for a few thousand units it's simply too expensive to create a special design.
