I think Virtual Boy had a lot of more serious problems than the 3D display.  It wasn't that impressive and it could be an eye-strainer, but there were loads of other serious problems like neck strain from cramming your head into the visor, lack of games and the monochrome display.

I would agree that Virtual Boy proved that 3D displays are not that compelling to consumers.  But there are better reasons to dislike it.
