LCD do have a huge advantage in how they behave with light incoming on the screen. Lets say you have a window facing your TV, with an old SD TV you would get a lot of reflection on your TV, with LCD you can actually watch the TV without having to close every single blind in the house...
Basically LCD has won the battle over plasma so this is kind of an inventory clearance deal..

Complete exaggeration.
1. Plasmas screen is made out of glass so it does reflect a bit more light, but no blinds need to be closed for people to see the screen normally. Besides, most manufacturers coat their screens with an anti-glare coating.
2. Plasma is still being manufactured by countless manufacturers. Just cause Sony doesn't make it, its not dead technology. Samsung, Panasonic and LG still support plasma.
3. Both LCD and Plasma are obsolete if you consider OLED TV's coming in the future.

Samsung has very little interest in prolonging plasma however, due to its dominance in the LCD market...
Anyway 3 years ago you could not find an LCD screen above 40" for any affordable price...
Higher screens were all plasma.
Just walk into a Best Buy now and check which technology dominates the 40-52", it's LCD, not Plasma ( ratio of LCD to plasma on display in my Best Buy for those sizes is like 80-20).

thats not true. the 42+ market is usually 50/50...especially over 50 inch where Plasma still sells more (due to lower price)
The problem with plasma is that they can't make sub 32 inch TVs at a profitable margins. You will rarely even see a 32 inch plasma these days. Its all 40 and up...

Best Buy.com...
40-49" : 8 plasma, 53 LCDs
50-59" : 22 plasma . 22 LCDs..

Point taken.

Honestly I thought like you but 6 months ago my 42" LCD died and I went to replace it at the local Best Buy and I was actually quite shocked at how few Plasma TV were available in that size ( especially considering that when I got my 42 inch LCD 1080p 3 years ago it was the only LCD available in 1080p and that size....)
PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !
PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
