For me, there´s more reasons.
1) "Mainstream" aspect. Nearly every reviewer, when review some JRPG, equate everything with FF. It´s always FF this, FF that, and so on. I get, that FF is "meter" of JRPG, but it´s get annoying after while. Same with gamers. Everyone read, how is FF great, so they play it. But they don´t know, that there are some other JRPG. Mybe they know, but doesnt´t care. Again, FF this, FF that.
2) Not all FF are actually good. FFXII was meh, FFX-2 horrible. FFX was good, but it was released in 2001/2002. Now is 2009, 2010 when XIII arrives. That´s too long without solid main FF. But even if FF isn´t good, it gets perfect score everywhere (but yes, it´s not problem only with FF). Again, annoying.
3) Gameplay somethimes isn´t that good either, good example is XII. Some bosses could be defeated without player input, if you use Gambits. Some difficulty wouldn´t be bad.
4) Milking of name. It´s not title with most games, but it still milked pretty much. And for worse, quality of such games is mediocre at best. Dirge od Cerberus, pfff. It´s no good, when you expect (or want to expect) good game and get garbage.
Overall, I´m not that big fan of FF, as I used to be. Nowadays, I will rather take some Megaten games. Btw: I´m not saying, that FFXIII will be bad, and still want to play this game. But I refuse adore this game, as "the best" JRPG now. It can be, but it isn´t certain. We will see. |
Megaten? Wow, that's a hardcore throwback! I'm playing Dragon Quest IV on the DS right now and forgot how much I missed the "grind."
But I agree with you, FF has, as a series, become more diluted. I'll give XIII a shot though.
