We speak American English as a standard, and varying dialects as a non-standard. So, in a way we do speak "American" as it differentiates from that spoken in other English speaking countries. It is just a matter of how specific you want to get. Though we should note that American English didn't come from Standard British English, but an ancestor of the two, so they are both as valid in their respective countries.
