And the problem with today software is that progammers gets to lazy. 256 mb is enough for a good Linux distro.
Problem is with todays distros if you use the default settings and packages, 256 MB of memory just isn't enough to do everyday tasks. If you are running it as a server it would be ok, but in reality you need to remove many of the programs you never use that are installed by default, especially when running something like Fedora Core 6.
