Dogs have some pretty good skills and items that only they can wear (the Kaddis and the collars), but it all depends on how you want to build up your party.
I went for a Tank, Healer, Nuker and DPS (rogue/assasin) strategy, that way I could cover all the weaknesses of my party and still plow through all enemies.
Zethran and leliana are both good assasins, but is your pic really ;)
